Culture Clash III
ArtPrize  ( September 2013 Installation )

Two communities of which I am a part, Mennonite and the art world, rarely engage the other meaningfully. To address this concern, I combined two diverse artistic styles which form a bridge to symbolize the uneven and sometimes contradictory relationship of these two cultures.

YULETIDE  INVENTION
I longed for a Christmas tree. My parents said this was a pagan practice, and we do not want to honor that tradition. My tree was decked in gold in the dark of night.
FLAXFIELD BLOOM
We grew fields of flax grain, its blooms turning the entire field a beautiful rich blue.
COMMUNAL RITUAL
The entire family participated in harvest during “threshing days.”  Everyone had a job: Being a water boy, gathering bundles and pitching them into the thresher, or preparing a banquet style noon dinner.
TRIPLEX
A stylistic design of a three-bottom plow which turns the soil.  Diagonal shafts represent sod being up-lifted and turned.
BOY & MILKWEED POD
Life-preserving jackets contained “kapok” or milkweed pods. We did not participate in any war activities, including victory gardens and other WW II efforts. I personally concluded saving lives was worth defying church rules by personally collecting milkweed pods.
FIELD’s END
Diagonal cultivation and tractor’s turning tracks register a design.
