Culture Clash II
ArtPrize  ( September 2012 Installation )

The purpose of this installation is to inform historically, culturally, and aesthetically. The installation's concept, while made up of multiple pieces, is to be considered a single unit. Two communities of which I am a part, Mennonite and the art world, rarely engage the other meaningfully. To address this concern, I combined two diverse artistic styles which form a bridge to symbolize the uneven and sometimes contradictory relationship of these two cultures.

JOHN DEERE TRACTOR
A tractor’s green color is altered with time of day, seasons, clouds and changes in the weather.

COLOR FIELD DIAG II
Diagonal cultivation prevented wind erosion of dry soil by countering prevailing winds, creating sharp earth designs.

CROSS BEAMS
The cross beam’s motif in the barn interior recalls religious symbolism.

MOTHER
This image of Mother serving Sunday dinner is a reminder of a division of labor in many family structures.
AUTUMN FIELDS
Following the harvest, fields were stripped bare, leaving contrasting flat abstracted planes.

TUMBLING BLOCK
The tumbling block, a favorite of Mother’s quilt designs, was first known as “Mosaic from Antioch”, tiles graced walls and pavements in Plato’s time.
LILLIES
Mother maintained a large garden. Tiger lilies, along with other flowers, graced her garden.

FARM IMAGERY
A vertical column is composed of silhouetted barns, silos, sheds, machinery and the essential hay stacker.

GOTHIC DESIGN
Gothic images mimic arabesque patterns at the fields’ end.  We farmers were careful about the appearance of them.
